How to copy my accent ...

Copy my accent is not a site for learning English, or English grammar. But if you watch, listen and practise, I can help you speak with a standard English accent. The copy my accent stories are told in a south of England speaking voice. If you can copy my accent and speak clearly and naturally, you’ll be more easily understood wherever English is spoken. And you could feel more confident too!

Join Us and Log in, then all you need to do is ...

  • Watch one of the five copy my accent lessons from the sound menu. You can read along with me!
  • Listen to the sounds of the words, and the intonation (that’s the rise and fall) of my voice
  • Practise re-telling the story, using as many of those words as you can
  • Then make your own clip - upload and share it!

In each of my five lessons I will be telling a short story using groups of words that sound the same, although the spelling may be different. It’s that sound you need to listen to, and practise.

Here's an example. These three words - plate, eight, crazy, are spelt differently, but if you say the words you will hear they have a similar core sound. It’s a long (ā) sound. Each lesson will help you work on a different core sound. Copy my accent will help you speak these sounds more clearly. So listen to the words in my five clips, and don’t worry too much about how they look when they are written down. English spelling has some bizarre rules!

In these clips I will be speaking in a normal, conversational style – or trying to! You’ll hear me use shortened phrases such as, ‘I’d better’ for ‘I had better’ or ‘I hadn’t’ for ‘I had not’, and sometimes I use quite long sentences. It may look confusing when you read it, but I hope it sounds natural when you hear it.

Join Us, Log in, go to the sound menu, and watch a clip. You can read what I’m saying and hear how I say the words. You’ll also see a list of other words that have the same sound, try those words too. Watch, listen, and copy my accent. Make your own clip, re-telling the story using what words you can, then save upload and share! Or you could create a different story using other words with the same sound – it’s up to you!

One last thing ...

I’m a teacher, not an actor, and some of the clips look as though they were made in my kitchen. Strangely, they were! I am sure you can do better – it’s all about developing the confidence to have a go. So come and join us at copy my accent and let’s get started!
